Telephone Boxes

At the end of last year I started a new project which is photographing red telephone boxes in their current location.  To date I am really enjoying this project, not too sure why it has caught my imagination but it has, once you start looking it is amazing where you find them.  This site tells the story behind the Telephone Box.  I feel an addiction coming on here lol.  Some of the ones I have photographed are still in working order but are restricted to card use, where as some have been smashed up, which is such a shame but I guess a sign of the times.

This is the very first one I took (for some reason I seem to take the photo on dull days!!) This box has been stood here for years at the Eden Reclamation centre, I believe it is a Kiosk No 8. I drove passed last week and it has actually been moved back off the road.  To get this photo I had to stand on the other side of the road, which isn’t that wide in the back of the bus shelter, using a 50mm lens.  Behind the centre is one of the many clay pits in this area, known as Clay District.  Some people love them, some hate them.  They are part of the landscape to me but I don’t like what they are doing to the county.  Unfortunately the tourists who come here and admire them don’t see the destruction that has gone on behind them.  That mound is the soil that has been dug  out of the ground and left there, which means there  is a hole that size behind it!!!  The huge companies that work this pits are meant to ‘make good’ when they have finished their digging, but we seem to have an awful lot of redundant pits around here that haven’t been worked on for years and the companies have just walked away.  Anyway I am digressing, sorry.

This one is in the small harbour of Portholland, there is only a hand full of homes here and it is right on the coast.  One of the residents lost his car to the sea last week in the storms. It was just washed away, thankfully he wasn’t in it.
